TAXCO, OLD MINING TOWN.
MSc. Rodrigo Espino Hernández.

PART 6

FROM THE FIRST, THE SUPPLY OF HAND LABOR FOR THE MINES

WAS PROPORTIONED BY MEANS OF THE SO-CALLED “DISTRIBUTION OF INDIANS”.

THIS LABOR SYSTEM OBLIGED THE INDIGENOUS
OF THE VILLAGES SITUATED EIGHT LEAGUES AROUND (CUERNAVACA, TEPECUACUILCO, OQUILA, MALINALCO,
AMONG OTHERS), TO REALIZE DIVERSE ACTIVITIES
IN THE MINING CENTERS WITHOUT RECEIVING ANY SALARY.

WITH THE DESCENT OF TH EPOPULATION THE LABOR SYSTEM

THAT WAS FAVORED WAS KNOWN AS “INDIOS NABORIOS”

IN THIS CASE, INDIGENOUS OF THE VILLAGES
SUCH AS YEHCATEOPAN, OZTZUMA, CUEZALA, TELOLOAPAN,
IGUALA AND OTHERS, HIRED THEMSELVES
FOR FOUR OR FIVE REALES A WEEK.

IN THIS SENSE IN CAN BE CONSIDERED THAT THE “INDIOS NABORIOS” WERE REALLY FREE SALARIED WORKERS.

WITH RESPECT TO THE SYSTEM OF LABOR SLAVERY,
ITS UTLIZATION IN THE MINES OF TAXCO,
IN THE LONG RUN, WAS OF LITTLE IMPORTANCE.

THE SLAVES WERE BROUGHT TO TAXCO
ESPECIALLY BY THE SPANISH
THAT FOUNDED THE FIRST MINES
SUCH AS CANTARRANAS AND TANANGO.
