During this time many of the men from the area left to go to the United States to find work.  Some never came back; others started new families in the U.S.  The women had to find a way to survive the demands of feeding a family with or without the help of their spouses.  The women had jewelry making skills from the production of abalone jewelry so they transferred those skills to making pewter jewelry.   For the first few years, they only sold products locally until they acquired a mentor. The mentor was from the United States and is still assisting the women with business matters.  The mentor has requested to not be identified so this person will be referred to as Pat.  Pat is working with the women of the cooperative to be more business minded instead of just working to keep busy.

Over the past 10 years, the cooperative has grown from selling products locally to producing products for export.  Almost all of the products they make are exported to the United States and sold to distributors.  The cooperative wants to use the Internet to tap into consumers directly instead of producing products for very minimal margins. The cooperative makes about 10% on each piece produced when they sell to a distributor but, if they can sell directly to a customer, they can make at least five times that. The problem they recognized with this strategy is the lack of capitol to create the inventory needed to sell to consumers directly. They have several thousand different SKU’s in their inventory.  They said they need $10,000 U.S. in inventory to be able to make enough products to have on hand to be able to fill an order in a timely manner. The second obstacle is the ability to publicize and market the website. The next obstacle is the most difficult.
