The Psychology of Gifting Jewelry I

Whether they let you know their intentions or not, many clients shopping for jewelry have a single goal in mind: finding the ideal gift for an associate, friend, or loved one.

As you help you client through the process of determining the perfect present, there are a few things you should understand about the psychology of gifting jewelry.

First, the buyer is motivated. He or she is motivated to buy and to please the future recipient of the gift. Ask questions of the buyer concerning the needs, likes, and personality of the intended recipient to get a good idea of the nature of the person who will receive this gift.

Also, realize that the buyer is intimately familiar with his or her own tastes and desires more than those of anyone else, including his or her recipient. He or she will choose those pieces that they love and would love to own. Watch their movements, gestures, and reactions to determine which pieces they favor. Describe those pieces based on what you know about the person who'll be receiving the gift. For instance, "I think your daughter will really love this necklace, the style is popular with other teens in the area." Do make sure you're honest when giving such information, though, and that your advice is genuine. Remember, you are helping your client meet a need - the need to give a wonderful and appreciated gift.
